I forgot something before I recalled it
artist’s book with film, light, water, chemicals, paper, ink, thread, fabric, and adhesive, 9 × 13.5 × 0.25 inches, 2022–2024
First self-published in 2022, the artist’s book I forgot something before I recalled it contains black-and-white photographs taken during a trip in Taiwan two years earlier. Over the following two years, these images were revisited and abstracted through the use of water in the darkroom and hand embroidery on paper. This self-publishing practice continued from 2022 to 2024, as Wang moved to New York from Taipei — a transition, both geographical and psychological, that provided a new body for the memories to be reshaped and retextured. As the needle pierces the paper and the thread moves back and forth through the surface, the hand movements of making and mending trace the labor of remembering and recalling, each effort to preserve unraveling the tender thread of memory.
